Female bank robbers on the rise

The woman's pink sweater, pink purse and wig with pink highlights were bound to stand out in the small Pickerington bank.

But it was the woman's intent that was more remarkable: She was there to rob the bank, having handed the teller a note that read she'd "start shootin" if she didn't get some money.

A woman had never robbed a bank in the Columbus suburb before, at least as far as any Pickerington police officer can remember, said Pickerington Police Cmdr. Ralph Portier.

But female bandits are becoming more common.

Women have long been accomplices behind the scenes -- writing demand notes or driving the getaway car. But the percentage of women actually robbing a bank has been increasing gradually for the past five years.

Nationally, 6.4 percent of the nation's 7,417 bank robberies last year were committed by women, compared with 5.4 percent in 2003, according to the FBI.

In Ohio last year, women were responsible for 18 of the 261 bank robberies -- or 6.9 percent. In past years, the number was likely to be one or two, said FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas. - Read the entire article here
