Male abuse victims suffer from stereotype

In Feb 2009 Wendy Murphy did an article for the Patriot Ledger. I wanted to comment/post a few parts of that article here:

Like most parents, I relish the myth that blonde female fifth-grade teachers aren’t dangerous. It helps me feel good about sending little Johnny off to school every day.

But feel-good cultural pablum distorts the disturbing facts:

According to the Department of Justice, females account for 6,000 sexual offenses each year. A total of 1.6 million men and 1.5 million women were sexually abused by women when they were children. The majority of female offenders are between 22 and 33 years old and are not mentally ill. They are typically employed in professional jobs or as managers and a high percentage of their victims are “close” contacts, such as students, family friends and children they advised in some fashion.

It is refreshing to see articles like this. Though I wish she had made some mention of the fact that the "reported" offenses are low compared to actual offenses, especially when it involves a female offender.

When they offend against boys, we either ignore or discount the harm because it seems impossible for a boy’s parts to get, um, tingly if he’s truly being harmed. Truth is, boys suffer terribly, even when their parts are tingling. But because we high-five them as “lucky,” they aren’t free to talk about the experience as painful. This silencing adds to the psychic pain for male victims and so long as we continue to view male sexual abuse through the prism of an orgasm, it will continue.

If we really care about boys, we need to mind the research that shows how they suffer as men. As adults, they often suffer from PTSD, drug addiction, failed intimate relationships, etc., and they don’t heal easily because they have to find a way to connect the dots between adult symptoms and long since-ceased abuse.

So very true. So many people call on men to "stop the abuse" yet how many think about how "the abuse" that was done to them by men and women plays a part in this? We should call on all people to stop the abuse. The gender politics and battles that occur over this are selfish and hurtful of all abuse victims.

That McCallum was ordered to post only $1,000 cash bail and faces no mandatory prison time is proof that our legal system is part of the problem. - Read the entire article here

Considering she is alleged to have sexually assaulted the 12 year old 300 times in 18 months you have to wonder.

Child torture again

Here is an ongoing case in which the mother has been arrested for allegedly abusing her children. Again. this woman had already pled guilty in the past to child abuse charges and yet nothing. How much more harm was done to these children? When will our family court system get its act together and stop treating children like property?

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - A Spring Hill woman has been arrested after police said she imprisoned two children without food, water, or even light.

Police said Shelley Blair locked a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy in an upstairs room with no food, water, light or even a bathroom.

Police found the children walking on the road last fall after they apparently escaped. Both were malnourished and bruised.

She was previously convicted of child abuse 5 years ago. - Read the entire article here

And here is a previous article on this:

Shelly Blair pleaded guilty previously to child abuse charges before the latest incident, causing members of the community to wonder why the state allowed her to possibly do it again to the same child.

Shanell Cuzzort used to take care of Blair's then 7-year-old girl but noticed odd behavior.

"She used to eat out of garbage cans. Kids found her eating out of garbage cans at school," said Cuzzort.

According to court records the girl had bite marks, bruises and was starved. Blair was sentenced to three years of supervised probation. Cuzzort hasn't seen the family since the incident until two weeks ago Cuzzort's husband saw that same girl with Blair.

"(The child) looked like she was 6 years old when she's 13," said Cuzzort.

The Department of Children's Services and the juvenile court judge in Maury County said just because a parent is convicted of child abuse charges does not mean they automatically lose their parental rights. If the parent completes all the terms of their sentence, the guardian can regain custody. - Read the entire article here

Yes it is acceptable for some parents to regain custody of their children. However when you have abuse that comes down to bite marks, bruises, starvation, and results in behaviors where the child is eating out of garbage cans? That is not a case of someone just having poor parenting skills or being over zealous with disciplinary measures. This is a mother who is actively torturing her own child and causing who knows how much long term damage. In cases like this there should be no return of custody. Period.

Offender Freed

Here is a story that just does not sit well with me:

Standing shackled in a Lucas County Common Pleas courtroom with her family behind her, Dawn Fisher said her eyes had been opened and that she was ready to live life again as an improved person.

Convicted in 2006 for having a sexual relationship with a teenage boy and giving birth to his child, Fisher was sent to prison in July, 2007, for violating conditions of her probation. Yesterday, after twice denying her requests for early release, Judge James Bates released Fisher from her two-year sentence, ordering her not to have any contact with the victim.

She was initially given a smack on the wrist with the first sentence and even then she did not follow the rules of her probation. Not a good start and a waving red flag I think. Why would the Judge now decide that it is acceptable to release her??

Under consideration was a letter from the victim's mother, who said that her now 3-year-old granddaughter needs her mother out of prison.

"I, being the mother of the boy involved, feel her release would be extremely beneficial for her daughter [my granddaughter]. I feel mother and daughter have been apart long enough," the victim's mother said in a letter attached with the most recent motion for judicial release.

So should this criteria apply to all sex offenders who are incarcerated and have children?

Fisher, 34, formerly of Swanton, gave birth in December, 2005. She had begun the relationship with the boy, then 14, the year before.

A mother of three, she pleaded no contest in September, 2006, to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and was sentenced to house arrest and probation. She violated those conditions in 2007 when she failed to complete sex-offender treatment programs ordered at her sentencing. Judge Bates said yesterday that he was not making similar programs a condition of the two years of community control imposed yesterday.

And yes another case where the abuser becomes pregnant from sexually assaulting the victim. And if she did not complete sex offender treatment why would anyone not want her to do so now?

Cleveland-based attorney Elizabeth Kelley told Judge Bates that she filed the most recent request for judicial release, not because she was stubborn or because Fisher was avoiding punishment, but because Fisher "desperately, passionately wants to return to her family, especially her three children." - Read the entire article here

There are many people in jail and prison who desperately, passionately want to return to their families. Why should someone who has already violated probation in the past be treated so much differently? I suspect that her gender played into this decision.

Disabled child sexually assaulted

Here is a case in which the victims mother becomes friends with another woman and over time comes to trust her enough to allow her to baby-sit her developmentally disabled child. This trusted "friend" then sexually assaults the child and when caught tries to blame the victim:

A Metzger woman sobbed Tuesday morning in Washington County Circuit Court as she was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for raping a developmentally disabled 14-year-old boy.

Prosecutors said they suspect Theresa Dawn Leppin, 23, may have borne the boy's child, but, at the request of the family, decided that should be determined independently.

Yes another case where the abuser may have become pregnant from her acts of sexually assaulting the child.

According to Deputy District Attorney Dan Hesson, Leppin and the boy's mother worked together and, eventually, the mother came to trust Leppin enough to let her baby-sit. Leppin's husband and the boy were friends and enjoyed playing video games together.

When her husband was not home around Christmas of 2007, Leppin led the boy to the bedroom, told him she loved him, and had intercourse with him.

And my pet peeve appears. She raped or sexually assaulted him. Saying she had intercourse with him is wrong.

The boy had the mental capacity of a 6-year-old, Hesson said. Because of the child's age, the crime did not fall under the sentencing guidelines of Measure 11, which requires a minimum of six years and three months in prison, Hesson said.

The mental capacity of a 6-year-old. I think that right there speaks volumes.

When confronted by police, Leppin first denied the allegations. She then came up with excuses, including her malfunctioning glands and alcohol. Most repugnant, she finally burst into tears and blamed the boy, Hesson said.

"The waterworks come on and she begins exhibiting behavior similar to what she's been exhibiting today," Hesson said. Leppin allegedly later sent her husband to the boy's house to collect a cell phone she thought might contain incriminating evidence.

"Throughout this investigation, she's made very forceful and very immediate denials about her guilt," Hesson said.

And this behavior often causes a lot of damage to the victims. Some victim have said that it has caused them more pain and anguish than the actual abuse. And next are comments that are nothing more than excuses:

Defense Attorney Eric Hanson said Leppin had no wish to deny the horrific nature of her crimes. He said post-partum depression and her protectiveness of her family kept her from thinking straight in the aftermath.

"Attempts to minimize were foolish and silly, and obviously lies," Hanson said. "It's inconceivable to her how she allowed this to happen."

"I'm sorry to (name deleted) and what has happened," Leppin said. "I know it's been really hard for them as much as for me." - Read the entire article here

The last line is a red flag to me. Saying it has been really hard for them as much as for yourself is not an apology but rather an attempt to solicit sympathy.

Woman attempts to forcibly inseminate her wife?

Here is a story coming out of Massachusetts about a woman who allegedly attempted to inseminate her wife against her will. Basically a woman trying to rape another woman:

PITTSFIELD — A woman who allegedly intended to artificially inseminate her wife with her brother's semen has been charged with domestic assault and battery.

Stephanie K. Lighten, 26, was released on personal recognizance after denying the allegations in Central Berkshire District Court Wednesday morning.

Jennifer A. Lighten, 33, told police that Stephanie Lighten, her wife, was "all liquored up" when she returned to their Lincoln Street apartment, where the defendant then allegedly tried to use a syringe to inseminate her, according to a police report.

Jennifer told investigating officers that Stephanie "has been talking about trying to impregnate (her) for some time," police said.

According to a report by Pittsfield Police Officer Kipp D. Steinman: "Jennifer said that Stephanie had a 'turkey baster and her brother's semen in a sealed container.' Jennifer said she told Stephanie that she didn't want to get pregnant." The device was actually a large syringe with a catheter tip, police said, and it was still in its original package when officers confiscated the item.

That's allegedly when Stephanie threw Jennifer on the couch, grabbed at her clothes and threatened to impregnate her, police said. - Read the entire article here

And there is more to the story which you can read at the above link. One thing from the story that makes me wonder is this bit:

Judge Rita S. Koenigs ordered Lighten to "refrain from abuse" and to return to court for an April 29 pretrial hearing.

So an attempted sexual assault rates sending someone home and telling them to refrain from abuse?

Sexual Assault by step-mother

A case from Texas that went to trial and the step-mother was found guilty:

SEGUIN — A Guadalupe County woman faces 18 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of sexually assaulting her 13-year-old stepson.

Alaine Denise Vorheier, 36, was convicted Thursday of four counts of sexual assault, three counts of indecency with a child and one count of prohibited sexual conduct. She was found not guilty of another four counts of sexual assault. The jury, consisting of five men and seven women, sentenced Vorheier the same day.

During four days of testimony, Assistant District attorneys Mark Kimball and Tom Mitchell presented evidence that Vorheier had engaged in sexual acts numerous times with her stepson, as well as a DNA paternity test showing that the boy was likely the father of one of her children.

The sexual abuse was bad enough but this case demonstrates something that male victims can have added on to be even more abuse. That is that their abuser can become pregnant from abusing them. And it is more than possible that the VICTIM may be forced to pay child support to his abuser. It has happened in other cases like this one.

More from the article:

“They believed in this case and gave it all they had,” Hollub said in a press release. “I am even more proud of the juries we have in Guadalupe County, not only did they hold Ms. Vorheier accountable for the terrible things she did, they gave her an appropriate punishment recognizing that women as well as men cannot be allowed to victimize our children.”

“In this particular case, Dr. Carter did a good job explaining the dynamics between two people, the unequal balance of sexual power and the position of authority that Vorheier was in,” he said.

And my favorite comment, one which gives me hope that more and more people are coming around is this one:

“The reason this particular case is important is because these kind of cases — with a male victim and female perpetrator — don’t go to trial that often, he said. “Things change and people are realizing that boys are still kids, they need to be protected, too.” - Read the entire article here

Murder/Suicide

Here is a case in which the mother allegedly tried to kill herself and her 6 year old daughter. Why? According to the articles the parents were getting a divorce and she did not want her daughter to end up with the soon to be ex-husbands new girlfriend. Some excerpts from the articles:

But the threats from Silvia Garcia turned into tragic action as the scorned woman -- determined not to see the couple's 6-year-old daughter become apart of a new family -- slashed her own wrist and the wrist of the daughter, court records revealed.

Silvia Garcia, 40, and the girl lay in a blood-covered bed in the master bedroom, both suffering from life-threatening lacerations inflicted by the mother, authorities believe.

Her daughter was slashed on the wrist and the right femoral artery located in the child's inner thigh. - Read the entire article here

Mom in alleged murder-suicide attempt says she did it to keep daughter away from husband's new girlfriend

The Deerfield Beach mother accused of slitting one of her young daughter's wrists and both of her own in a murder-suicide attempt told investigators she did it because she didn't want the girl to come into contact with her husband's new girlfriend, court records show.

The 40-year-old mother was in bed, the sheets drenched in blood. Her 6-year-old daughter was in bed in another bedroom, holding her cut left wrist as she told deputies, "Mom did it, but I know she didn't mean to." - Read the entire article here

These kind of cases demonstrate, to me anyway, a huge sense of entitlement and selfishness on the part of the parent who does it. Often when it is a man that kills his family and then himself it is viewed as criminal and when a mother does it is often viewed as mental illness.

And something that really strikes home in so many of these cases is the words of the child. "Mom did it, but I know she didn't mean to." And I would guess the child believes this and blames herself for what happened.

Torture case

You can read the entire article about this case here.

According to the article the child was kept captive in the house for 3 years. During that time he was locked in the bathroom when Gigliotti wasn’t at home and was forced to sleep either on the bathroom floor on in the hallway. The bathroom window was also boarded up.

One Sunday he managed to escape after the suspect allegedly forced the boy to strip naked, wrapped his hands in tape and beat him with a 3 foot block of wood and a garden hose with the metal tip still attached. The beating was so bad it broke the boy’s arm not to mention severe lacerations all over his body.

The police report states "The weapons cut him on nearly every part of his body, including his head, back, buttocks, shoulder and hands..." And there is more:

Nugent said that lacerations on the boy's buttocks were so bad that "there was no way this young man could even sit down."

Besides the boy's most recent injuries, the affidavit said, medical staffers found scars from old beatings on his body.

Another female pedophile?

Here is another sick case of a mother allegedly raping/molesting children:

A 40-year-old Shreveport woman has been indicted on aggravated rape charges, accused of having sex with an underage boy and telling that boy to have sex with his sister.

Shreveport police said Susan Johnston of Thompson Street is the second woman even indicted by a Caddo Parish grand jury for aggravated rape.

Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland said Johnston is accused of having sexual relations with a boy beginning when he was 11 years old and continuing for two years. The little girl was molested starting at age 8, Holland said. The children were also told to have sex with each other on a handful of occasions, Holland said. - Read the entire article here
