Here is a case in which the mother allegedly tried to kill herself and her 6 year old daughter. Why? According to the articles the parents were getting a divorce and she did not want her daughter to end up with the soon to be ex-husbands new girlfriend. Some excerpts from the articles:
But the threats from Silvia Garcia turned into tragic action as the scorned woman -- determined not to see the couple's 6-year-old daughter become apart of a new family -- slashed her own wrist and the wrist of the daughter, court records revealed.
Silvia Garcia, 40, and the girl lay in a blood-covered bed in the master bedroom, both suffering from life-threatening lacerations inflicted by the mother, authorities believe.
Her daughter was slashed on the wrist and the right femoral artery located in the child's inner thigh. - Read the entire article here
Mom in alleged murder-suicide attempt says she did it to keep daughter away from husband's new girlfriend
The Deerfield Beach mother accused of slitting one of her young daughter's wrists and both of her own in a murder-suicide attempt told investigators she did it because she didn't want the girl to come into contact with her husband's new girlfriend, court records show.
The 40-year-old mother was in bed, the sheets drenched in blood. Her 6-year-old daughter was in bed in another bedroom, holding her cut left wrist as she told deputies, "Mom did it, but I know she didn't mean to." - Read the entire article here
These kind of cases demonstrate, to me anyway, a huge sense of entitlement and selfishness on the part of the parent who does it. Often when it is a man that kills his family and then himself it is viewed as criminal and when a mother does it is often viewed as mental illness.
And something that really strikes home in so many of these cases is the words of the child. "Mom did it, but I know she didn't mean to." And I would guess the child believes this and blames herself for what happened.
