NE - Former Lexington school teacher Kelsey Peterson, who last year fled to Mexico with a 13-year-old boy, was sentenced today to six years in prison. Peterson, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this summer to federal charges of traveling with a person younger than 18 to have sex.
"I want to take responsibility for what I did," Peterson told U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp in a halting voice. "I am not a sexual predator. That's not who I am. "
In handing down her sentence, Smith Camp said she does not consider Peterson a "sexual predator." Instead, the judge said Peterson's maturity factor "seems to be on the level of a junior high school student." - Read the entire article here
BRISTOL - A former teacher at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford was charged Friday morning with sexually assaulting a student in Bristol, police said.
Julie Denno, 27, of Ballston Lake, N.Y., is accused of sexually assaulting a male student under the age of 16 from the school over a two-month period at her North Pond Street home, police spokesman Lt. Edward Spyros said. - Read the entire article here
RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. - A former Jackson teacher was arrested and charged with statutory rape in Rankin County, officials said. Sheral Smith, 37, was arrested Sept. 17 and is free on a $50,000 bond, Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest said. The charges surround an incident involving a 14-year-old boy who Smith met at the school, Guest said. CANTON - A former Fairless middle-school teacher is headed to prison for having a sexual relationship with an underage teen.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Richard D. Reinbold Jr. sentenced Kathryn Gill to four years in prison Monday, with the option of placing her on probation after six months.
"Why would she do such a thing?" the mother asked in the letter. She also questioned whether the sentence would be more severe if Gill was a man and the victim was a girl.

A former Arkansas band director has been sentenced to four years in prison for possession of more than 197 pictures of child pornography.

A school counselor accused of having sex with a student was in court Thursday. After several delays a preliminary exam for accused sex offender Carrie Denbow has finally begun.
She was a counselor at the Hill Academy in West Lansing from 2005 until 2007 when the alleged crimes took place. A former student testified today that back in early 2006 when he was just fifteen Denbow performed oral sex on him in her office at the school.
He also told Ingham County assistant prosecutor Guy Sweet that she went to a motel with him and two other students in February of 2006 to drink and have sex. The victim said, "Well, I asked her did she want to go get a hotel room and she said she had to think about it because she was kind of scary about messing around with me cause I was so young and she said she had to think about it. Twenty-four-year-old Erica Baker, of Corry, pleaded guilty to one count of corruption of a minor Wednesday in Erie County Court. In exchange, two other corruption charges were dropped and she agreed to give up her teaching license.

A judge sentenced former teacher Cathy Heminghaus to six years in prison this morning for performing sex acts on teenage students at Ferguson Middle School in the fall of 2005.
The jury convicted Heminghaus of three counts of statutory sodomy, two counts of a teacher having sex with a student and two misdemeanor counts of plying minors with alcohol. It acquitted her of 18 counts.

Heminghaus testified that the teens forced her to sit in a back seat that folded down into the trunk, put her coat on top of her, played music as loudly as they could and drove for hours around north St. Louis County. Heminghaus testified that this happened about 15 times. She also said that she would hide in the trunk of the car in order that she would not have to perform sex acts when the boys stopped the car to visit friends.
The four alleged victims, who were 13 to 16-years-old at the time, testified that Heminghaus was the originator of the plan and willingly performed sex acts on them at the school, in her car and at a park. - Read the entire article here
A former county teacher arrested for alleged sexual acts with a student has been charged again, after police stopped a vehicle occupied by the woman and the same underage boy during an early-morning driver’s license checkpoint this weekend.
According to reports by Clinton police, the 15-year-old Hispanic male was behind the wheel of a blue Ford Explorer and the woman, Jeannie Michelle Hodges of 12237 Dunn Road, Autryville, was in the passenger seat. The vehicle was stopped just after midnight Friday, while traveling on Main Street in the city square, according to reports.

Health science teacher Julie Miller Culbertson, 38, of 1200 Davis Mountain Road, was arrested by Henderson County Sheriff’s Office detectives at the central offices of the Henderson County school system in May 2007.
